Happy New Year: 2004's Looking Up!

Wow, it's been a while since I posted. It is winter break, though, folks, and I've had a few other things occupying my time. The holidays went relatively well, and I hope yours did, too!

There have been several positive developments recently: We started the South Beach Diet on Monday. As a couple, E. and I are aiming for a combined total weight loss of between 80 and 100 lbs. in the next several months - part of our effort to trim down, shape up, and become healthier. I might post progress reports here, but don't expect me to divulge, at any point, what starting/current/goal weights were, are, or should be ;) ! This is day 4, and the going is a little tough: South Beach is kind of a modified Atkins. While I am not a big sweets person and am not in the habit of drinking sodas, my normal diet did consist of a lot of pastas, rice, etc. E.'s transitioned pretty well, but I've been feeling weird. My brain tells me it's hungry, even when my stomach is telling me it is full, full, full. The hardest thing for me is giving up french fries. I love the french fries. Anyway, we're in the strict phase for the next few weeks, so for the time being, we can't even eat fruit, oatmeal, or dairy (with the exception of low- or non-fat cheese). Breakfast is eggs, eggs, and more eggs - and while eggs are versatile, there really is only so much you can do with them for breakfast, you know?

Another New Year's resolution was to keep better track of our finances and to work toward debt reduction (actually, debt elimination, but that'll take a while). Well, with the help of an outdated OEM version of Microsoft Money, we've got a budget going, debt reduction plan and all. On a related note, I called my credit card companies and got them to reduce the interest rates on the two cards I currently have - yay!!! Not to say that I am getting the best APRs available, but a combined reduction of 8% will certainly make the debt reduction go a little bit more rapidly!

Probably the best news of all, though, is that sometime in the next week or two, E. will switch over to the day shift - no more 3:00 - 11:30 shifts for him! Considering that I teach at 8:30 AM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and have a 9:45 AM class Tuesday and Thursday this semester, the schedule change is a HUGE plus. We will actually be on the same schedule , and, moreover, we can begin to live like a normal couple: having breakfast together in the morning, arriving home at relatively similar times in the evening, and eating dinner together (before midnight). The prospect of a social life - going to a movie in the evening or having dinner with friends - is also very appealing. Since E. finished college classes in 1999, there's been a grand total of about two months during which our schedules have been relatively similar.

That's about it for the time being. I've got classes to plan and some getting-ahead reading to accomplish, so I've got to get back to work. Hope 2004 is treating everyone well!
